Kickstarter Status Update: Stories to be Told, unsuccessful? I don't think so...

My Kickstarter is over.

I didn't make funding.

I did make 486 dollars of my 1,100 goal. That is 44% funded, and pretty damn good for my first time out.

Thank you to backers and everyone who supported me through donations, emotional and mental support, and shared the living daylights out of this little project of mine. This project, Stories to be Told is so important to me, and I can only move forward with its creation.

It has been quite a month. I found my passion, my Arete.

I have learned a lot this January, everything from marketing/business practices, how to get back up after falling, finding my joy in my writing my Arete), the choice to go independent, and the most important thing I learned is how to fail forward. Failure is a part of life and for every thousand failures, there will be successes. The more you fail and keep going (learning from each mistake and misstep), well the more you are to succeed. They also say it takes about 10,000 hours of work to make something a reality.

Arete: (Moral Virtue) as defined by Wikipedia, excellence of any kind. Connected to the concept of fulfillment of purpose. Greek in origin.

My friend and mentor, James always says that arete is the fulfillment of one's true purpose. I like that so much, that I knew I had to buckle down and take my writing seriously, edited and revise my writing, and take a step into my fears and do thing I was afraid to do; get myself published. That lead into the Kickstarter, and little did I realize that I would start a path to greatness and ever failure.

So, what is next? Well, after I write to my backers, then I begin Plan B, which entails putting together "Stories to be Told", Issue 0 in a PDF version for my backers as a thank you.  Quite possibly I will sell the PDF version in the near future, but that is still early to say. There is the re-planning and re-structuring of the Stories to be Told Kickstarter re-launch with the printing of Issue #1 (maybe Issue summer or Issue * or Issue Badger, or whatever I care to call it). This will require a month worth of marketing and promotion prior to re-launch. I'm looking at April. Also, includes promoted my self as a writer, going to seminars and lectures on writing and business of art, printing business cards, bookmarks and stickers as promotional materials. Even going to writing convention, especially after I has print versions of Stories to be Told, although I will still go to these conventions and events before that happens.

I still have a Winter Give-Away over at Here, There be a Writer. Go over there, click like and share the Winter Give-Away status to be entered into the give-away that runs through tomorrow (1/31/2018).  I will be drawing winners for a limited edition bookmark and another for a Phoenix Rising Press sticker.

On the creative side this means I need to continue to write and edit new works for future Issues. Also, I am working on ramping up of my submission goals for my children's books, A Little Lost and A Spatula Story, and any other pieces for my current and past catalog of works. The only difference this time is I will only by submitting from a list of selected works and researching places where I think they would fit into, and then submitting those pieces to those places until I get a taker.. That is going to be a project in itself.

These are the things I started in 2017, and will manifest in 2018 and beyond.

I know that sounds like a lot, right? It is. But it is worth it. Will I fail? Sometimes yes. But other times I won't. I will always learn what to do differently, what new things to try, and document what I do.

If I get board, I always have some other project to work on. This year my podcast Quantum Highway is going to be recorded and released! More on that later...

Round 2 at a Close

Round 2 is done! I finished on a high note and feeling really good. I will post a final thoughts tomorrow but today, a short check-in on progress.

This week:
     *Reading: Over half way through Wicked (Gregory Maguire). I found my reason for reading it. The story Murder of the Orient Express (Agatha Christie). It's not a long book, but I haven't given it proper time to soak in to my little grey cells.
is unique and brilliant in part, but at least a third of the time I find Maguire's writing either dry or over my head. Writing novels should not always be about writing so people can't understand, but writing so people can understand. I am determined to finish it, but not enjoying his writing style. Another chapter down in
     *Writing: wrote 1200+ words Monday on the Top Secret Project (using writing blitzes). Nothing Tuesday. ROW80 check-in today.
      *Social Media: 4+ blogs daily. I finished visiting all of Sundays posters. This won't always happen, so I am enjoying the fact I  manages to visit everyone this time around.

I feel that I slacked with the editing goals for Sunday and my submissions. Not that it is bad, but I feel I could have used some time more effectively. Last night was the first night in months that I had an improv practice. In a way my brain understood this and can expect that I missed a chance to get some editing done. That's the goal I feel bad about missing the most.

Onto next week...

This (upcoming) Week:
      *Reading: continue with Wicked and Murder on the Orient Express. Try to start The Subtle Knife (Phillip Pullman), maybe a chapter here and chapter there.
       *Writing: write daily. Finish Golden Compass Review and post it. Spend time on the Top Secret Project. Finish and post my #writestuff challenge.
         *Editing: Look at The Real Road Trip. Work on edits of  a 2 page minimum by Saturday. With the end of the Round I am not set specific goals throughout the break, but enough to keep me busy during that time.
         *Social Media: 4 blogs daily and keep up with blogs that I am following.

Look at All Those Words

Let just jump into it, eh?

This week:

      *Reading: I got to part 2 of Windhaven by George R. R. Martin and Lisa Tuttle. It's a good story, but there are times when I think the story is bogged down by itself, if that makes any sense. I have not read any of the Game of Thrones series. I am on my second go of Windhaven and hoping that this time I can at least finish it. Also been working my way through Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman. It's an anthology of short stories and a bit of poetry. His stories are so different and not what I expect, but I still like them and find them intriguing. Hoping to finish Trigger Warning by week's end. READ TOTAL: about 60+ pages.

     *Blogging: posted a short blog about some of my favourite poets, the ones that inspire me. Read it here. WORD TOTAL: 369 words.

     *Novel: I revised 10 pages of the manuscript (The Real Road Trip). I ended up doing more than the small fixes. Some spot just needed drastic help. The plan is to revise 10 pages each day that I set to editing. Going to try to refrain from major edits, but sometimes the plot needs major surgery. I end up fixing it then and there. Probably not the best thing to do. EDIT TOTAL: 10 pages.

      *Social Media/Visiting: I have not missed a day this week (since Sunday). Holding steady at 4 visits/comments per day.

      *Theatre Stuffs: have more sound/music for The Mousetrap. Rehearsals are going well, now if the weather will co-operate on Sunday nights/Monday mornings. Have a TV interview lined up to promote the show, and a couple of places to submit press releases to. Poster is done and beginning to make appearances around town. Isn't it sexy?

This Week (to do):

      *Writing: have a flash fiction challenge to write for, due by 2/27 for the Google page #writestuff (see here). And there the Doctor Who fan-fiction I started and see what can be done with it. I forgot to print it up and thus it became buried.

      *Novel: edit 10 pages a day, at least twice before Sunday (if possible). Valentine's Day is Saturday and the Hubs asked what I wanted to do. I told him if we see a movie, it should be Paddington. Because!

      *Bogging: 1 a week. Technically I am done for the week, but that was a small post so I am working on new blog ideas.

      *Submitting: at least 1 before Sunday.

      *Reading: finish Trigger Warning (Gaiman)

I've just had an idea! Lightening! Brilliance!

To help my goals be SMART goals (see below), I am going to link to the journals I submit to, tally word counts, pages read. It might be lofty, but I think that will help my goal become SMART.

Specific–- target a specific area for improvement.

Measurable - quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.

Achievable - specify goals that are reachable.

Realistic - state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.

Time-related - specify when the result(s) can be achieved.

She has no friends in town, just moved here and needs a friend. Your father is looking to get a promotion! You be a gracious host, right now, to His Boss’s daughter.” She pulled Selynee off the couch, looking disgusted. “You will not ruin this, young lady.”

“I don’t wanna, Mom.”

“Don’t start with me,” threatened her mother. Selynee looked at her mother standing by the couch.

Lion taming my Edits and Coraline is awesome!

This weekend turned out busier than I thought and thus this is what happened...

This Week:
     *Editing: finished a complete revision of Christmas Trees. Posted a bit of it for WIPpet Wednesday. I feel good and glad at taking the chance and sharing my work with my fellow writers/bloggers.
     *Reading: started The Clockwise Man (Doctor Who adventure by Justin Richards. I had read this some time ago, early 2014 I believe. But since I had read the rest of my Doctor Who books in January, I thought I should reread. It's the first of the Eccleston books. Also, yesterday I read Coraline by Neil Gaiman. It was awfully good and terrible fantastically awesome. Being only 160 pages it was a perfect read for a Saturday afternoon. There are times when Neil's stories feel like a Twilight Zone episode. I love Rod Serling, who was an awesome writer, and Neil Gaiman who is effin' awesome. So it's perfect! Could you imagine possibilities? Okay, that might just be me. :-)
     *Social Media/Visiting: since Wednesday, I hit Weds, Thurs, and Friday, four blogs each day (some are ones I frequent and at least one that is new to me. I did miss Saturday, but will probably hit at least eight today.
     *Theatre Stuffs: for The Mousetrap, working on my stuff for the program director letter outlined, bio (need to update last bio), and cast/crew list typed (expect for the one that are not filled in the crew). Will work on this more today.

Forthcoming in the New Week:
     *Blogging: 1 new blog entry (non-AROW80).
     *Novel: complete the read through of The Real Road Trip.
     *Writing: going to change this up from last week. Going to write something new and move my daily goal to 200 - 250 words a day from the current 500 words (when I can write). I realized that I don't always have enough time to write in a day. The goal is still everyday, but 500 words is a bit much at this time and 100 words is not enough. So it's 200 - 250 words daily. Stating today!
      *Editing: print some short pieces and plan a day to meet with my critique partner.
      *Submitting: 2 this week (missed this one from Wednesday to today).

I missed a couple of goal from Wednesday. Felt bad, as I am wont to be some days. I had some time between things Friday and Saturday. Still feel good overall and pretty productive.

Excited that I am really making a stab at editing/revising more of my work. Starting to learn how to handle that beast. It's like the lion tamers from the cartoon circuses with the whip and chair.

January has been awfully productive and exciting and am ready for February. Mousetrap is coming along beautifully. Who knew Murder could be fun, Dear Readers? What about you? How are your Round of Words goals coming? What have you been up to lately?

I played 50's trivia at the annual meeting for the Keuka Lake Players and it felt like a battle of the bells to ring in between Ryan Love and myself. All in good fun and I surprised myself by how much I knew. I still suck at any sports trivia and my history from the 50's could use a tune up. Good times with one of my theatre families.

Sunday Afternoon and Coffee

Christmas is finally packed away. FINALLY!!!!

No Tree, just a Hubs! 

Funny how Christmas is shoved back into boxes after being rushed up during the month of Turkey or earlier. Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh, but i was hearing about Christmas trees being on the curb by the afternoon of Christmas Day. And yes, i did wait until almost the end of January before shucking the Christmas off the walls and stowing everything back into the bowels of my house. (Can you tell I am a theatre person with a flare for the dramatic).

This week:
     *Submitting: I submitted to 2 journals. Actually it was this morning, because I didn't get to it yesterday.
Working on a rhythm and system to this goal. Still figuring this one out.
     *Blogging: I did post once this week. It was my flash fiction for a challenge, but I had be meaning to post it. So it worked out for this week.
     *Reading: making my way through The Story of Martha by Dan Abnett (Doctor Who novel). Not much else reading wise since Wednesday.
      *Editing: revised my flash fiction piece The Bridge (1419 words). You can read it here. Edited my press release, which is now being used to promote my show (The Mousetrap). Finished 1st draft of The Audition (re-write).
      *Writing: finished writing a rough draft of my holiday story currently titled Christmas Trees.
   
For this week:
      *Novel: finish the last 66 pages of The Real Road Trip and begin the small fixes (spelling, grammar, tense shifts, missing words, etc.).
      *Writing: look at Doctor 8 fan-fic story I started last year. Try to write at least 200 words on that. Try to continue to write 500 words a day. Not been good with this. I usually get at 200 - 250 words a day, when I am able to write.
      *Blog: 1 new post this week.
      *Edit: review my edits on The Audition begin edits on the The Real Road Trip.

While a quiet week at the day job; it was a busy week with theatre, directoring, and being VP of a theatre organisation. Yesterday was shopping at Salvo for costume pieces and getting familiar with my costumers ideas and syncing up both our ideas. We made a HUGE dent in the costume needs! Will have a poster sometime today and will include in future posts. So if you are in the area in March, I would love to see you at the show. This week is a busy week for Mousetrap, with rehearsals three days in a row and the Golden Age of Radio show that happens next weekend (I have 3 cast members in the radio re-enactment show too).

A Day Late, but Not a Dollar Short!

I'm a day late. I have no good excuses for why I didn't type this up yesterday. so I am just gonna jump right in to the check-in and the goals.

This week:
    *Editing: I am really proud of myself with this goal this week. Saturday, which is not a normal goal driven day, in fact. I usually reserve Saturdays for being unplugged. But I sat down with The Audition (FINALLY), but after 10 minutes of sitting with the original draft, my notes from last edit session and my brain storming ideas, I just decided to pull out the word document and start writing. It funny how the whole time I wasn't editing the damn thing, I somehow found the new plot and complete the rough draft of the re-write. This means that now I need to review and revise the re-write, but  I feel so much better with this new plot. I took out the younger sister and focused the main points about the conversation. I want to do a short revision of this new draft by Friday. Finish cleaning it up and add a few details that I missed on Saturday writing session.
      *Reading: finished The Graveyard Book (Neil Gaiman), but I might have already mentioned that. Finished Only Human (Garth Roberts) and started The Monsters Within (Stephen Cole). The Doctor Who novels are quick reads and highly addictive, if you are into Doctor Who.
       *Novel: Not quite done with the read through of The Real Road Trip, only on page 40 of 115 pages. That is a major goal this week.
       *Writing: did not write yesterday or Friday. Need to be more diligent on spending time writing. I have three unfinished WIP that I can work on, the press release for The Mousetrap, plus there's always new blogs to write and poetry. I did write Thursday and Saturday.
       *Social Media/Visiting: I visited blogs and websites, about 4 on Thursday and Friday, also was a little active on Saturday.

For this coming week:
       *Submitting: at least one this week.
       *Novel: finish read through of The Real Road Trip.
       *Write: Monday - Thursday (at least). Maybe Friday, if I feel inspired.
       *Blog: sometime this week, before Friday evening include posting a WIP on WIPpet  Wednesday. I think it's time to try this.
       *All other ongoing bs small goals....etc, so forth...

Overall my mood has been really good. Keeping my productivity up and so far balancing the murder and the writing. The murder chorus is all but record and will be edited hopefully by Friday. In case you are curious, Dear Readers, the murder chorus is an audio tableaux that is going to play at the opening of each show to tell the story of the Murder of Culver Street.

Halloween Decorating and Musings

Rubber Bat!!!

Short night, Dear Reader. I am feeling less on than I normally am. I think I need to unplug for the rest of the night. Strange mood. Not sure where it came from. So, I am helping the Hubs create a "Halloween Mood Table". Something he found on Dinosaur Dracula, a guru of nostalgia (particularly Halloween this month). Anyway, I need a bit of distraction to move out of this other worldly heinous mood.

This week has not been with its productivity, Dear Readers. So I will stick to the short re-cap for the check-in tonight. Done a lot of cleaning around and my house is mostly clean and presentable!! :-)

Run Down of the Week:
 *Reading: been making my way through American Gods (Neil Gaiman). Getting really good, so much so Oryx and Crake (Margaret Atwood), but that is a refresher read, therefore I am taking my time.

   *Editing: finally got a chance to look at The Audition, my silly and comedic look at auditions. Written for 24 Hour Theatre 2013. It's needs an over haul, BIG TIME. I started going through it line by line, thinking I could just revise it that way. Not so much. It needs to be re-written. I am okay with it, but I am going to have to spend some time working on it this week. Good news is that I figure out a slant I can use for the script and it will still have the same basic premise, but more organized. Basing the story off of some of my own past auditions and using a suggestion from David to keep the comedy edge. Although I admit comedy is not my forte.
    *Submissions: I submitted to one journal journal so far this week. If I can hit up two more by week's end I will be happy.
    *Blogging: completed my first Book to Movie review of the month for The Last Unicorn. If you are curious, check it out here. I have the next one in queue. The Little Prince.
    *Visiting/Social Media: check in with Twitter and my blog hops, at least three a day. I even caught up on last weekends slackery.

Orangey Lights and Kitty Gargoyle

Theatre stuffs, shows, and projects are keeping me pretty busy this month. Might be  part of the reason that my writing has nosedived. Not sure. Not trying to worry too much about it though. As we of the Round of Words crew understand that this is the blog challenge that knows we have a life. Heheheh! And with Halloween around the corner, been trying to get into and enjoy the season. More pictures to follow, but see a bit of the early Halloween goodness at the Scott Household.

AROW80 Sunday: Round 3 winding down

Currently healing from a sinus attack yesterday. Slight wannabe headache today, so taking it slow.  Saturdays have been my unplugged day for the last few weeks. Feels good, because I usually am working on this or that during the week. Today is getting back on track and still unwinding. I had training yesterday for the day job and that kind of throw a monkey wrench into the weekend. But it was 4 extra hours, giving me almost 41 hours, a total was 40.75 (I left a touch early Friday which accounts for the .75 = 45 minutes).

This week:
    *Finished, The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie, and then started, American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Wow! Only 4 chapters in and feeling like I want to just keep reading. Surprised it's taken me this long to get to reading Gaiman's work. Thinking I am going to enjoy this book. The Gun Seller, I am not usually into spy novels, but Hugh's wit and comedy make it a fantastic read.
    *Editing/Writing: started a deeper edit of Road Trip. Found a big gap in the opening scene. Not a plot hole, but realized that there need to be more. Been working on character development. Finished my press release. Got one of my technical betas input. After one more edit, I can submit it to the director for review and then get it out to the presses. Haven't written anything new, but feeling like I need to focus on edited for a bit and also submitting.
    *Visiting: Except for Saturday, I have been really good about visiting, reading, and commenting on  follow bloggers/writers; this includes today. I average about 3 to four. Time to up the game. Using twitter as a networking tools more more. Spending less time on Facebook, unless I am networking.

Did not accomplished:
    *Submitting: while I did not get to this this week. I am planning on submitting to at least one today to start the last week of Round 3 right. I cannot slack on this. I feel like I need to just sit down and submit; look for new places to submit and start figuring what could be submitting to previous journals I have submitted to. I have had a couple saying the I should submit again.  Nothing published yet. Still trying.
     *Blogging: missed blogging Friday and Saturdays. I have unplugged time and that is just as important. I blogged earlier in the week, so not a total loss. Always a new week, right, Dear Readers.

     *Submissions
     *Blogging
     *The Normal Stuff: writing, editing, visiting, etc. Meaning the stuff you usually see me working on.

Trying to remind myself, Dear Readers that this quotes is the most important thing, that I go out and do, instead of saying I'll do. This is hard when I don't get something down, or when I say one thing and then it doesn't get done. I want people to know that my word is good. That I do, and not just sit and talk about doing. James posted a really well wording piece that uses this principle, "Show, Don't Tell". Go read it! It's worth it! Also, there is the Blog Hop for us ROW80-ers here. Come and cheer us on.

Me, I am working with my hands in several fires. Some are one off projects that don't kick up until next month or November. Others I am currently working on, The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, collecting props, working on sets, some promotions, and even get to be in the final scene. Also, working on the Ghost Walk for the Falls Harvest Fest in 2 weeks. Always something going on.

A Round Almost Complete

Been feeling good on the writing front. Actually I sat down to write a 500 word story yesterday and cranked out 800+ words and the feeling that I might have a novel on my hands, or at least a novella (2nd one started too). The thoughts and words have been flowing, especially when I let it.

Also working on my organization and productivity too, as you will see below. I do have to point out the in the fall I am usually doing one show (in some way), and several smaller projects throughout September to December. I can't help my self. I am a theatre whore (in the good sense). I love to be onstage, write, direct, be backstage, or anything. So I am in the mix again and loving it. I thought I was going to have a quiet Autumn, heheh, not so much. I am props/set mistress and general gopher (although one could call me a producer) for The Lake Country Player's Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, a story originally written by L. Frank Baum. Although some might slap me for saying that, but some of what I doing fall into the producer position. So be it!

This week has been rather fruitful, so begin the bullet points!

This week (so far):
    *Writing/Editing: finished my 1st draft of "Road Trip". Feeling good about it, but thinks that it needs more character and less boring. Still trying to find that. The short story version will be submitted when it reaches that level, hopefully soon. I am working on organizing a possible novella version.  I have "Crying Mascara" and "When the Bluebirds are Gone" to re-review and submit too! Also looking for some Beta Readers too! ~hint hint~ :-)
    *Reading: pushing my way through "The Gunseller". Loving it! Hugh is much more detailed in his narrative. It's a different read and I have to read slower, but it's really worth it in the long run. Been enjoying reading on my porch too. Not sure how long that will last, but there is something calming about the crisp air and sometimes foggy morning air. It's inspiring. Nothing else finished of "Misty of Chinocoteague" or "The Name of the Game", should devote a bit of time before bed to finish Misty at least. Being the shortest book currently in process.
     *Editing: used Scrivener once this week so far, plan to work with it more this weekend. 24 Hour Theatre is this weekend and I am writing Friday Night, perfect time to to practice (worse comes to worse, I use word just play with it while breaking from the writing. Also, will be directing a show the next day! Much excitement to be had!!
      *Visiting: pleased to say that I have been visiting 3 to 4 blogs daily since last week. not only am I getting to know my fellows, but find inspiration within their words. Thanks Guys!! Go check out Denise D. Young, a really excellent and inspiring blogger and writer.
   
That which didn't happen:
     *Submitting: this has not happened yet. I need to make some time and find what piece are complete and submit them to multiple journal, contests, and sites. This definitely needs to happen.
      *Blogging: have not non-ROW80 blogged since Saturday. Meant to on Monday or Tuesday. Don't feel too bad though, because I worked on editing and writing the beginning of this week. I can pick up a new blog tomorrow, so, not worried. Besides when I am writing or editing, that's the point right, I am doing something. I dislike blogging if I don't have something to blog about.

AROW80 Check-in: Wibbely Wobbely Derpy Werpy

Sometimes all it takes is a dream. In my case, it was a dream about missing French class for three weeks.
Another case of life imitating dreams. Although dreaming about school is NOT necessarily my favourite topic for the land of Nod, but oh well!

I had a pretty fantastic Tuesday. Not only because I was able to break out of the quasi-pseudo slump that I had been hanging around in, but I think I got David out of his funk-kel-delic winter blues that have taken it's hold on him. We actually took a long late afternoon walk over the new Centerway Walking Bridge in downtown Corning and did a loop across the river dike, back over the Bridge Street bridge and back past Corning Inc.'s HQ. Lots o' Sunshine and certainly much needed, since i am pretty sure we were both vitamin D deprived.

Before that I was able to make progress with getting back on track with my writing projects and other things. First, I journaled yesterday morning. I mean really took out my pen and wrote about this, this, and whatever else I could think of. I had missed that feeling of writing without thought (or maybe there was thought, because I needed to get out something that was bothering me, or work out on idea). Journaling is a good thing and I am glad I have my Tuesday and Thursday mornings (with nor without Morrie). Okay, I can't help the internal commentary, Dear Readers.

Yesterday, I was able to edit a short play, a 1 act that I had written over last summer during my friend 62 Hours of Art. Just me in a hammock or by my personal rock spot with my easel writing with reckless abandon (oh and on Beulahland's porch too). The script made hardly any sense after 7 1/2 months of rest. I know what I wanted to say, but it wasn't clear in the writing. Yesterday, i did a massive revision/rewrite and it sucks A LOT less. Might still need work, actually I am counting on revising it again, but I think I have a better grasp on the actually plot. It's about a young woman who comes to live on a farm and discovers something about herself. (I get very thoughtful with my scripts sometimes).

I also manged to get the some housework caught up (dishes and laundry), so the house looks less of a wreck. With Tempest building up to rehearsals twice to three times a week now, I need to try harder to keep the housework under control. Speaking of the Tempest. I am off book!! I am also 70% sure of my cue lines. I have a costume and most of our scenes props. It's definitely coming together (see photos below).

It's been a good week so far! This is the last AROW80  until April 7th (check out the Blog Hop), but I wanted a chance to write one more for this round and leave on a higher note and I did. ~w00t~ So, this is my higher note, a drawing of Derpy on the Tardis! have a great rest of the week, Dear Readers!
