October Writing Challenges: Writober Edition

Short and sweet, here are Days 2 thru 4 of my micro fiction pieces written for the Writober challenge.

Midnight Harvest

Jesse wandered among the rows of corn, passed dusk, well into the evening time and the minimal light of her torch barely reached her bare feet. The feet that slapped the ground with each footstep. She could see there wasn’t much left of the harvest. She had come late before and still got something from the harvest.

The night birds sang quietly but trilled in ominous song as she walked past each of the markers. Each of the markers indicated which landowner owned that crop. So, she was hopeful there would be one or two ears of corn that she could take home for dinner. Her and Matthias hadn’t eaten anything today, and at this rate they wouldn’t eat tomorrow either.

Jesse threw up her torch light towards the sky, startling two large dusk moths as they dance in the very pale light of dawn. It wasn’t much light to see anything, but Jesse kept walking. She kept pulling at the leaves, checking to see if there really was an ear of corn left.

The moths fluttered down to her head, lowering her torch so not to scare them. They seemed to glow. And she kicked at the dirt, throwing a few small rocks forward, making the moths dart high, though they glowed brighter.

Almost at the end of this row, Jesse decided to turn back, her stomach aching with an empty stomach. When the moths glowed brighter still and rushed at Jesse’s face. Her hand batted at the creatures and felt cool metal against her palm. Pulling her hands away she saw thew two moths bobbing in front of her, holding two small lanterns. They quickly turned at raced further down the row. Jesse leapt forward and gave chase to the little inserts.

She didn’t really think, but just ran for a long time, until the moths suddenly disappeared. Jesse quit her pursuit, standing now in darkness, until quietly crested the small rise in the row. There in front of her were rows and rows and glowing vegetables. Jesse saw corn the colour of the morning sun, carrots like that of the late afternoon, and a deep purple looking thing that reminded her of the night. She blinked, crossing slowly down into the fields. Her hands grabbing at the corn and carrot, even pulling up the purple looking thing.

The moths returned to in front of Jesse’s face. Their iridescent eyes shining in the light from the vegetables. They fluttered their wings and darted away. Jesse turned quickly and took off toward home, she didn’t want to dare to catch a glance and the glowing field because she could get home. Tears at the corner of her eyes, she whispered thanks to the moths.

Visitors

Lily sat on her porch, her head in her hands. She didn’t want to look up. She didn’t want to see the evidence of her crime. Of course it wouldn’t be long now, Mom was due home any minute now.

She lifted her head, checking every time a car drove around the curve in the road, but there was nothing. Letting her head dangle as she stared at the ground, she heard a noise. It sounded like an animal crunching on the partially dried grass in the yard. Lily lifted her head again to see two foxes sitting in her yard. One was orange, the other a pale white.

The foxes sat there, watching her. The orange tilted its head, while the pale fox looked quickly away. Lily had never seen foxes so close, and she wanted to pet them, even give them a hug. Her troubles temporally forgotten.

Neither fox moved, nor did Lily. There didn’t seem to be any movement from the road. The orange fox sat still, blinked twice. While the pale fox got up and started to walk away. It was walking toward the road, which Lily thought was strange, but she felt compelled to stand and start walking towards the pale fox.

The orange fox blinked twice and let out a slow, but audible growl, but Lily did not turn back to the orange fox, she kept walking toward the pale fox. It was silent as it turned towards Lily, and she suddenly heard the orange one howl, but it was too late as the white car whipped around the bend in the road and right into Lily. The only sound that was heard was the screeching of tires.

The driver exited the car to see the young girl lying in front of his car. There were two foxes sitting in the distance watching the scene play out as the driver knelt to get a pulse from the child’s neck.

The Letter

Mya’s hand shook as she wrote the letter. Inked letters spilling from the cheap motel, “I hope you are okay…” her hand shook, and she stopped, staring about the back of a paper menu. The words of the Rising Moon Café were bleeding through her letter. She looked again, reading the words out loud, “I hope you are okay, shrimp manicotti. Please come to Hot and Sour Soup.”

She shook her hand, trying to rid herself of some offending thoughts.

“You want another cup of coffee, Miss,” a voice said above her. Mya glanced upwards to see a smiling face of Juan. “Or maybe a piece of pie?”

Mya shook her head with much less force, No. Just the coffee please.” She didn’t want to tell Juan that all she could afford was the unlimited coffee and al the jelly and ketchup packet she could squirrel away.

“Alright,” said Juan, “but if you need anything please let me know.”

“Thank you,” said Mya, turning back to her menu letter. Her hands cupped around the chipped, cheap porcelain cup. The coffee tasted bitter, even with six sugar packets to flavour it. Mya picked up her pen and started writing again. “I don’t know what to tell you,” Mya scribbled. “I miss you.” She stopped and crumpled up the menu, looked towards Juan who was chatting with the cook. She shook her head, reached into her pocket and pulled out several quarters and dimes. Laying them on the table, she grabbed another paper menu and scribbled a quick note, rushed out of the café. Juan following her path out of the café.

He wandered over to the booth where Mya had been sitting. He saw the change. A quick count showed a tip of one dollar and fifty-five cents and a hastily scratched note. “I’m sorry, Juan. I hope you are okay, please come home. We miss you. Mya.”

Juan blinked and looked up. Mya stood outside, looking into then café. Juan rushed out to the meet Mya, but the second he left the café he found he was standing in a field, next to a grave. It was covered over in weeds and wildflowers. The grave was writing in faded etched letter Mya, beloved of Juan, 2024.

OctPoWriMo end of Halloween Poems

I have been keeping up with my poetry entries for OctPoWriMo, just not as good as posting lately. I really tried to follow the daily prompts, usually writing something loosely around the theme of the prompt, but using the poetic form suggested. There were a few that were either a bit to hard on a particular day, or the prompt was a bit different than I planned for. This usually meant that I wrote a haiku about the prompt for the day. Haiku is and probably always my go to poetic form, that and pantoums.

Here are days 30, 31, 29,and 28.

Thank you to Maria Berg for keeping OctPoWriMo alive.

OctPoWriMo #14 - Shape Day!!!

 It's shape day!!

I usually skip day, or shape poem day (a Letterkenny reference.) If anyone is familiar with Letterkenny, and 'to be fair!' not many are. But, 'TO BE FAIIIIR' it is actually a good show. Today's poem is written in the shape the the subject matter. I don't always like trying to write a poem in the shape of the subject matter/theme, but today I did think, 'why not?'

Dear Readers, I present today's writing faaaaaaaaaaare...

Black Mirror: A Review

I recently discovered a Netflix show, a Sci-Fi anthology based show, written and directed by Charlie Brooker, that so blew away my expectations of what is scary and what is possible. I am familiar with Brooker's previous works, Newswipe and Screenwipe that explain how the news, TV, and movies are presented to the public.

His approach to this show is different, and yet ultimatley familiar. Brooker make everything direct and ultimately funny, even if it the subject matter if not funny. He makes it real! He makes it scary.

A four season show, much of which Brooker has written, directed, and executive produced started in 2011 and take you for a ride. It's like a modern of the Twilight Zone, that features humans are the cause for the cruelty foisted upon themselves, usually. I would say Black Mirror was darker than The Twilight Zone, but truthfully, Rod Serling wrote many episodes designed to scare the people of the 1950s. Brooker is no exception. While not every episode always dark and foreboding, much of the show presents a bleak world where man tries  to master over the technology it has created. The best part is Black Mirror does not use AI (artificial intelligence) to bring mankind down the 'rabbit hole'.

The episode called Nosedive (and a personal favourite) features Lacie, an insecure office worker who is trying to boost her social media score to secure a posh apartment in Pelican Bay where they only accept you if you have a 4.5+ score. The entire world uses something designed to look like Facebook, it's eerily mirroring our own world, to share photos and rate other photos to garner favour with other, get the best stuff in life to get a higher score.

Episode Nosedive  - used for review purposes.
You see, in the world if you have a higher score, well then you have access to better housing, better rental cars, better friends. The worst your score is, the harder it is to get quality products or services, and the more people will look down on you. I think this is the most how our world is, when it matters what you have and who you know. Lacie is pushed to the brink trying to get to her friend Naomi's wedding when after a social score plunge meets Susan, a truck driver who had once had a 4.5 score and lost it all after her score failed to save her husband from Cancer. She tells Lacie that is is better to not cater to the system, because then you don't have to keep working to retain that score. In the end, (I won't spoil the ending here, Dear Readers. You to watch for yourself.) sometimes it is better to not worry about what others think, because you are still alive.

The scary part is the China already uses a system much like this. Read here for more China's Social Credit.

This episode features Bryce Dallas Howard (Lady in the Water) is a surprising well acted role, and the story is well developed and not contrived. The writing is really spot on taking the currently technology of the world and taking it to where it will likely be in the next ten minutes or next year. Scary, isn't it?

That is what I love about Black Mirror. the stories are related. You can understand why the character do what they do, even if you don't agree with them. They are real people.

A few of my favourite episodes include 15 Million Merits, The Entire History of You, White Christmas, White Bear, San Junipero, Shut Up and Dance, USS Callister, and Hang the DJ. All of the episodes are quality storytelling, in the vein of The Twilight Zone, but with the modern twist. Also, I must note that the new Doctor, (Doctor Who) Jodie Whittaker is feature in The Entire History of You, Jodie Foster directed Arkangel.

Subjects that are touched on in Black Mirror: controlling people for personal gain, social media scoring, retribution of family, using people's DNA for your own fantasies, and social media justice. If any of this interests you, then you definitely should check out Black Mirror. If you like amazing quality storytelling, then Black Mirror is for you. If you like weird things, then Black Mirror is for you.

What TV shows and or Movies have you been watching, Dear Reader? What books are you currently reading? I am currently enjoying Netflix's Bill Nye Saves the World, and Garth Nix's The Keys to the Kingdom series. (Lady Friday) Leave me some love below, Dear Readers.

Up next a look at Children's Literature. I am currently submitting two of my children's picture book stories to publishers and part of my research involves reading current children's book that are on the shelves of bookstores everywhere and looking at what what I read as a child (I had quite the collection back in the day).

Kickstarter Status Update: Stories to be Told, unsuccessful? I don't think so...

My Kickstarter is over.

I didn't make funding.

I did make 486 dollars of my 1,100 goal. That is 44% funded, and pretty damn good for my first time out.

Thank you to backers and everyone who supported me through donations, emotional and mental support, and shared the living daylights out of this little project of mine. This project, Stories to be Told is so important to me, and I can only move forward with its creation.

It has been quite a month. I found my passion, my Arete.

I have learned a lot this January, everything from marketing/business practices, how to get back up after falling, finding my joy in my writing my Arete), the choice to go independent, and the most important thing I learned is how to fail forward. Failure is a part of life and for every thousand failures, there will be successes. The more you fail and keep going (learning from each mistake and misstep), well the more you are to succeed. They also say it takes about 10,000 hours of work to make something a reality.

Arete: (Moral Virtue) as defined by Wikipedia, excellence of any kind. Connected to the concept of fulfillment of purpose. Greek in origin.

My friend and mentor, James always says that arete is the fulfillment of one's true purpose. I like that so much, that I knew I had to buckle down and take my writing seriously, edited and revise my writing, and take a step into my fears and do thing I was afraid to do; get myself published. That lead into the Kickstarter, and little did I realize that I would start a path to greatness and ever failure.

Note: failure is only true failure if it stops you from moving forward.

"It is not a catastrophe, but merely a course correction."
~James A. Owen

So, what is next? Well, after I write to my backers, then I begin Plan B, which entails putting together "Stories to be Told", Issue 0 in a PDF version for my backers as a thank you.  Quite possibly I will sell the PDF version in the near future, but that is still early to say. There is the re-planning and re-structuring of the Stories to be Told Kickstarter re-launch with the printing of Issue #1 (maybe Issue summer or Issue * or Issue Badger, or whatever I care to call it). This will require a month worth of marketing and promotion prior to re-launch. I'm looking at April. Also, includes promoted my self as a writer, going to seminars and lectures on writing and business of art, printing business cards, bookmarks and stickers as promotional materials. Even going to writing convention, especially after I has print versions of Stories to be Told, although I will still go to these conventions and events before that happens.

My Publishing Company!

I still have a Winter Give-Away over at Here, There be a Writer. Go over there, click like and share the Winter Give-Away status to be entered into the give-away that runs through tomorrow (1/31/2018).  I will be drawing winners for a limited edition bookmark and another for a Phoenix Rising Press sticker.

On the creative side this means I need to continue to write and edit new works for future Issues. Also, I am working on ramping up of my submission goals for my children's books, A Little Lost and A Spatula Story, and any other pieces for my current and past catalog of works. The only difference this time is I will only by submitting from a list of selected works and researching places where I think they would fit into, and then submitting those pieces to those places until I get a taker.. That is going to be a project in itself.

These are the things I started in 2017, and will manifest in 2018 and beyond.

I know that sounds like a lot, right? It is. But it is worth it. Will I fail? Sometimes yes. But other times I won't. I will always learn what to do differently, what new things to try, and document what I do.

If I get board, I always have some other project to work on. This year my podcast Quantum Highway is going to be recorded and released! More on that later...

~James A. Owen

Please keep coming back, Dear Readers. Thank you for your love and support. Leave me a comment on what you are doing in 2018. What books are you reading, movies you have seen, projects or classes you are taking, etc.

As always, your devoted writer,
~Cindy

All TEH Things Wednesday

This Week:
*Reading: finished Dead Before Dark (Wendy Corsi Staub). A very engaging story, but I was a little Inkheart (Cornelia Funke).
disappointed in the ending. It felt rushed and a little anti-climatic. Over all was a fun read though. Focusing now on
*Writing: wrote  Monday (500+ words), Tuesday (616 words), and my ROW80 post (628 words). Also, I have written my daily poems for OctPoWriMo (about 100+ words per post).
*Editing: spend an hour Tuesday and Wednesday on The Real Road Trip. I have about 4 chapters set . Finding the story better now. Still its like playing giant word Tetris . It's coming, albeit slowly, but it's coming. This why I need to plot more and pants less.
*NaNoWriMo Prep: started breaking down my scenes (have 6 currently) and made a character list for Modern Muses.
*Theatre Stuffs: sending out regular week in review emails, wrote my bios for the Golden Age of Radio Show and The Music Man. Bought a first aid kit and the glow in the dark spike tape will be delivered tomorrow. Still need a box for my stage manager stuff.
*House tending: dishes and laundry done. Discovered a leaking pipe in the basement, just above the hot water tank. The joys of home owning and being an adult. That call will happen tomorrow to get someone to fix it. Decorated for Halloween.
Social Media: 4 blogs daily (ROW80 and OctPoWriMo makes 8). I got most of that since Sunday and Visit at least 2 WIPpet Wednesday, as I miss that this past week. Visit my sponsor duties. Sponsor post has been submitted, will be live in November. I skipped #writestuff tweet chat to focus on the editing.

Been a good week, except I have been feeling distant. I think because I have a lot going on and my brain gets focus on one thing, and ALL TEH OTHERS get pushed to the back burner. Still, it's been a good week over all.

This (upcoming) Week:
*Reading : continue with Inkheart and start another Agatha Christie mystery.
*Writing: write daily, at least 300 words.
      *Blogging: post something Thursday.
      *Theatre Stuffs: report.
*Social Media: 4 blog daily and sponsor duties.
*House tending: carve/paint pumpkins. Bake Halloween goodies.

A Round of Words in 80 Days, the blog challenge that knows you have a life. Come and visit the Blog Hop and see what everyone is writing about, working on, or involved in.

• What are you currently reading? Inkheart (Cornelia Funke)
• What did you recently finish reading? Dead Before Dark (Wendy Corsi Staub)
• What do you think you’ll read next? Mrs. McGinty's Body (Agatha Christie) or The Faerie Path (Frewin Jones)

Today is also WIPpet Wednesday, the brain-child of K.L. Schwengel, the chief cook and bottle washer and flying monkey trainer. By using today's date I will share a bit of my WIP (working title) Modern Muses. Today's snippet is right after last week's, continuing with Teri's adventures in the dark. WIPpet math 21st day, 2 +1 = 3 +1 = 4 paragraphs.

Check out the Blog Hop to visit the other WIPpeteers and see what they are writing.

“Yes?” she said tentatively as she began to look around the darkness of wherever she was.

“I thought so. Nothing makes sense here, I should know,” the voice said, sounding neither male nor female, but was calming. Teri tried to relax some, inhaling and exhaling slowly, not sure if she was breathing or pretending to. “I know you are lost. You encountered one of them didn’t you?” Teri felt warmth surround her shoulder, or what she thought her shoulders were.

“Them?”

“So you really don’t know, then?” The voice grew closer and Teri was sure that her shoulders were real. There was pained that arched across her shoulder blades.

OctPoWriMo: My Hero (and my progress, sort of)

Somewhere between Wednesday and Sunday I missed something. I wrote my daily dose of OctPoWriMo and plans to write, I did. Thursday was a lot of Work right in Rehearsal, and then Friday was a big blur. Yesterday was my unplugged day. So, yeah, I feel less than productive, but usually after I type my check-in I feel better. Maybe today is the case. So, Dear Readers how did I measure up?

Oh, and I was introduced to American Horror Story this weekend by my beautiful friend, Kaylara. She is named (actually adapted from) after a dragon rider (Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern) and this makes my happy.

This Week:
*Social Media: I didn't. I admit that I went visiting my blogs and sponsor duties today. But, you see when I read a blog post I want to be fully engaged and leave a incite and a positive response. so, this morning I went to my 4 dailies and my sponsor duties. I feel better. No point in wasting my negativity by not being productive, so I a, ultra productive and begin the week on a firmer footing.
*Reading: been working my way through Dead Before Dark (Wendy Corsi Staub) a little every morning and at lunch. I also spent about 90 minutes yesterday morning reading. It is a very detailed story, so I want to be able to soak it all up. I have been slowly working on Inkheart (Cornelia Funke), only about 3 chapters in. I realized I have forgotten a number of this from the first time I read it. It's like reading it for the first time, but I am enjoying it as much as I did the first time. Definitely looking forward to watching the movie adaptation after reading the book (even if it is terrible).
*Writing: written mostly poetry since Wednesday (about 100 - 150 words per post). A little less than my daily minimum, but I am pleased with my poetic output thus far. This week is going to be much better.
*House tending: laundry, trash out to curb, and some dishes (still have a few more. Mostly coffee cups).
*Theatre Stuffs: glow in the dark spike tape is ordered, rehearsals are going well (scheduling is good better), getting sponsors, waiting on the confirmation for the interview date for one of the local TV stations.

Not bad, I missed a couple of big goals. I did not get to editing this week, nor did I post anything on Thursday. I think I need to post on Friday's instead of Thursday. I have more time on Friday's. Thursday is a rehearsal night and the last one was a long one. It is going to continue to be long as we approach tech week in two weeks! I will live, it's a fresh week, going make it count.

This (upcoming) Week:
*Reading: finish Dead Before Dark, make progress on Inkheart. BTW, I am at 37 books out of 50 for the year's reading challenge.
*Writing: write daily, at least 300 words. Write OctPoWriMo, and something else of my choice this week. Work on plotting (and outline) Modern Muses for NaNoWriMo.
*Editing: devote two to three hours Tuesday to editing some of The Real Road Trip.
*Blogging: post a poem on Tuesday, separate from the OctPoWriMo post.
*Theatre Stuffs: report. Start set drawings and notes for crew.
      *Anything Else....

Today's Prompt: What if one of your ordinary house hold objects had a secret? Lead a double life?

What would a pen do if it was a superhero. I am taking today's prompt and running with it. The thought occurred to me that maybe our pens, and even pencils might have a double life. Saving the day, rescuing the girl, slaying the monster? What would it be like?

Okay, I've gone a little silly on this one, but seriously it was fun to write. Enjoy, Dear Readers?

From MorgueFile
My Hero

My pen,
she sits all innocent like
lying on the table
acting like I don't know.

She has a little secret,
and never's told a soul
about what she does when no one looking.
You see she's a superhero
betcha you didn't see that coming
right?

My pen is a superhero,
how do I know?
Well, ever see when the damsels in distress,
or the Antagonist has the upper hand,
or maybe when all is lost?

Have you even wondered how the day is saved?

It's my little pen.
My little ball point, BIC, blue inked pen,
she jumps into the air
when the darkness has fallen
and we are sleeping safe in our beds.
She takes to the air
flying fast as Superman, around the world
in a blast of magic
and ink.

To the trouble she arrives,
not barely batting an eyelash,
as she set to work
writing a scene,
Where the hero arrives
maybe on a white ostrich,
is that even right?
Where the Antagonist is foiled
by a pen light at the right time.
Are you sure that's right?
Maybe there is a twist
and then she start anew with the plot.
My pen is mightier than the sword,
even when she writes about sword play.

Quick as any,
I am writing this down
when I can write her--
My hero,
 a happy ending too.

OctPoWriMo: Worth the Risk and the Poetry Corner

Poetry Prompt: What risk are you willing to take with your writing?

How do I view the risk to becoming a writer? I feel that the Blitz is really a very good form to express this idea. Blitzes go fast, pack a puunch , and get you thinking about the possibilities.

Word Prompts: Exposed, Honesty, Chance

Possible Poetry Type to explore: Blitz poem from Shadow Poetry.

Come and visit the OctPoWriMo-ers at the Blog Hop and see what everyone else is writing about.

Worth the Risk

Words typed
Words written
Written down
Written true
True as can be
True as my heart
Heart's desire
Heart's full
Full of ideas
Full of drive
Drive to write
Drive to publish
Publish is my goal
Publish it can also be a fear
Fear of failure
Fear of success
Success means trying
Success mean challenge
Challenge me to write
Challenge the way
Way is the path traveled
Way to go
Go out and be
Go forth and create
Create new world
Create art
Art is the pulse
Art is the future
Future is planned
Future is spontaneous
Spontaneous is risky
Spontaneous makes us alive
Alive is what is want
Alive is the reason
Reason is because
Reason is mine
Mine is the choice
Mine is what I make
Make the choice
Make the risk
Risk it all
Risk is worth it
It is better to try
It is wrong to not
Not going to give in
Not going to say
Say it is true
Say what I want to be
Be...
True...

Now, today I want to go back to the poem I wrote last year for OctPoWriMo 10/13. It's a tri-fall about the colours of a sunset. And since its October and sunset tend to be more vibrant and way earlier in the day. I've learned a few more poetic forms and challenged myself to try different things. Hope you OctPoWriMo is going well. What form of poetry do you like the best, Dear Readers? Like the least? Free verse versus form?

Also, from last year's NaPoWriMo, I present a kenning poem. Where a word becomes a compound word to explain what it is, from the old Norse. It is from a time when people didn't have words for some things so they had to describe it to explain it to other people. Here I use Singing-Breath to represent the Wind and Heaven's Ball is the sun.

To Find the Paths

Walking along the Hard Path
With the Heaven’s Ball to light my way--
I am warmed,
Yet I was lost
Following the hard path along the Steel Jungle.
Here the steel trees
That house the world's denizens.
All whom seem lost,
But I am not lost.

I know where the Dirt Paths flow
The ones that lead to the old places
Of trees and Earth People.
I feel less alone with the Earth People,
Hearing the Singing Breaths
And feeling the Fingers of Heaven
Brush my face.
Here is my home,
Even though I live within
The Steel Trees.

I always find my way back to
The Dirt Paths of the Earth People--
Once born to the Earth,
Forever of the Earth.
I follow of the Hard Paths,
Which lead to the Dirt Paths
Once there you will always find the way.

Birthday and Theatre Day, Some Progress...

It my birthday today, so I didn't do much writing or editing. I am not bothered by that as it was a good weekend. But because I didn't get to any that means that its back to reality on Monday.

This Week:
*Reading: finished Smoke and Mirrors (Neil Gaiman), continuing with The Amber Spyglass (Phillip Murder Comes Ashore (Julie Anne Lindsey, The Festival of Bones (James A. Owen).
Pullman),
*Editing: finished editing about 4 1/2 pages of The Real Road Trip.
*Writing: wrote on Thursday about 600 words.
*Social Media: visited 4 blogs Wednesday and Thursday, 3 blogs on Friday and sponsor duties. On track!
*Exercise: I walked to improv practice on Thursday.

It's not much, but I had the improv show Friday night. made about 70 dollars and made several people laugh. Then I cleaned my house Saturday, laundry, dishes, vacuuming, cat litter, and garbage. Saturday night was game night in Elmira with Fluxx and a Pop Culture Party Game (Geek Out!) And today it was The Curse of the Manley Manor in Montour Falls (getting to be in a magic show during intermission),  and  then dinner at Sorge's (with message from the kitchen). Finally my sweet little Ratty Darling gave my these wild flowers.

This week is back to the goals, but also it's birthday week with Weird Al on Wednesday and Renaissance Faire on Saturday.

This (upcoming) Week:
*Reading: finish Murder Comes Ashore. Continue with The Amber Spyglass and The Festival of Bones.
*Writing: write daily. At least 300 words and write Monday through Friday.
*Editing: 2 pages a day, at least of the Real Road Trip (NaNoWriMo novel 2014).
*Blogging: 1 new non-ROW80 post. I have some ideas for post that I have been hoarding. This might be a good time to pull that list out.
*Submissions: been deficient on this goal. Need to return to this goal, so this is a required goal. 2 new submissions this week.
*Social Media: visit 4 blog daily and sponsor duties.

WIPpet Wednesday and Cucumber Soda

Actually spent time with the hubs tonight. I took a little bit of time and made a picnic for David and I. We headed up to Spencercrest Nature Center for a dinner/picnic and some us time. It felt good! We both needed a moment or two to chill. Both of our weeks have been rather hectic and it was much needed. Armed with roast beef sandwiches, sweet pickles (David loved those), birthday cake Oreos, and cucumber soda. Yes, I said cucumber soda. It was surprisingly good.

And then on the drive home saw some deer having their dinner.

What's coming up, well, improv show this Friday! And my birthday is on Sunday. Not quite sure what I am doing for it, but I'm sure it'll be a good weekend. This coming week is the Weird Al concert in Williamsport and then there's the Sterling Renaissance Faire on Saturday. My friend Sara is making Faerie costumes. Will post picture. August is turning into a busy month. I am almost at the end of my three month hiatus from theatre. In the fall I start stage managing a production of The Music Man. So, I will be a busy bee again. After this summer I have found a balance with many of my goals and it is only gets better.

This Week:
*Reading: started Murder Comes Ashore (Julie Anne Lindsey), continuing through The Amber Spyglass (Phillip Pullman), and almost done with Smoke and Mirrors (Neil Gaiman). Neil's stories are always interesting and enchanting, even when they are a bit strange.
*Editing: pretty proud of myself this week. I edited about 8 pages of The Real Road Trip, my NaNoWriMo from last year and a story about two friends on a Road Trip. I had been fighting with trying to get through a  first full edit/revision. I kept putting it aside and putting it aside. I finally decided that I needed to edit it. I thus picked the draft up and begin to read. I changed how I made my edits. My practice is not perfect, but I am making more progress.  I would read a section and jotted notes on the side, sometimes correcting some of the minor spelling and grammatical, or slashing whole sections. Also decided I am going to wait until I finish going through the script before typing the edits in. I feel this is making the revision reading move faster. Also, I revised and edited a flash fiction piece for #writestuff monthly challenge. You can read it Maybe its Time.
*Writing: wrote on Sunday a ROW80 post, did a 15 minute writing blitz (about 414 words) on Tuesday, and writing today's ROW80 post. Been busy with other goals, but feeling better about my balance all the goals.
*Blogging: see above. Posted the story Maybe its Time.
*Social Media: visited 4 blogs daily and my sponsor duties since Sunday. One track!

This (upcoming) Week:
*Reading: finish Smoke and Mirrors and Murder Comes Ashore.
*Writing: write daily. At least 300 words.
*Editing: at least 2 pages of The Real Road Trip.
     *Blogging: 1 new non-ROW80 post.
     *Submissions: 2 new submissions.
*Social Media: visit 4 blogs daily and sponsor duties.

A Round of Words in 80 Days is a blog challenge that knows you have a life. Come see what fellow blogger and writers are up to at the Blog Hop.

It's also WIPpet Wednesday. Created by K.L. Schwengel, where the WIPpeteers share a bit from their current WIP. You take Today Date (7/29/2015) and use some math to relate back to the snippet. Today I give you 7 paragraphs for the 7th month from my new story Once Upon a Cloud.... With a little more banter between Cumi and Strat sitting down to lunch in Chicken Bliss.

Chicken Bliss was not very large of a business. An occupancy sign read Maximum of 25 persons within. It looked so much bigger on the outside.

Stratus crossed back to the table with two tall plastic glasses of something, “Here. Drink up, Kid.” Cumi eyed him, he was still calling her a kid and she wasn’t a kid. Her face twisting into a frown as she took the glass.

“The name is Cumulus, Strat. Cumi for short, you should know that.” She took the glass, “What you get me anyway?” The moment had passed as she looked into the glass. Knowing she should ask before she drank anything down here.

That was how Stratus often got into trouble, drinking before he knew what he was drinking, especially amongst the Terrans. Cumi eyed the kitchen staff suddenly feeling unsure, and then Stratus. There was no one else here and who else would know she was here, except Stratus and who of the Terrans would know to give her something bad. She was over re-acting. No one. Still she took the glass and sniffed the contents.

“It’s pop, Kid. Soda, cola, carbonated beverage. Relax! I got you a Coke.” Stratus said, smiling his goofy grin. Lifting his glass in the air, “A toast, to the …to the…:” shaking his head, “I don’t remember the words…ah ha, yes I do. To Life. Litcheim!”

“You are weird.”

“Thank you.” And he guzzled down his glass of Coke. “Another Marty!” he called over his shoulder.

First Wednesday, not a bad start...

I only just posted goals on Monday, how can it be Wednesday already? Okay fair is fair. I am starting off on a good footing. Hitting the ground running on some of the goals. This week is all goofy what what writing for 24 Hour Theatre and preparing for Connecticon. So much to do in so little time!

Onto the update~

This Week:
*Reading: about halfway through The Subtle Knife (Phillip Pullman) and about a fourth of the way The Night Circus (Erin Morgensen). Hoping to have Subtle Knife finished by next weekend. Need to start Murder Comes Ashore (Julie Anne Lindsey).
through
*Writing: wrote my ROW80 goal post Monday, almost 1000 words for my ROW80 sponsor post Tuesday, and today started my 24 Hour Theatre script. It's Superhero Theme in conjunction with the summer youth reading program. Going to get a little wacky, but will be a cute little script when I am done. I want a finished script by bedtime, also did a small  writing blitz this afternoon of about 15 minutes.
*Editing: edited my ROW80 sponsor post and submitted it.
*Social Media: did my sponsor duties and visited 4 blogs Monday and Tuesday.

This (upcoming week): Going to have to shove a lot into the next couple of days as I won't be writing at all Saturday and possibly Sunday. I am making the goals light this week to allow for Connecticon.
*Reading: try to finish The Subtle Knife and start Murder Comes Ashore.
*Writing: write daily, 300 words. Day off Saturday.
*Editing: start up revisions on The Real Road Trip.
*Social Media: sponsor duties and blog visits to 4 ROW80 blogs and/or blog I follow.
      *Submission: 1 submission before Saturday.

A Round of Words in 80 Days is a blog challenge. In 80 days set some goals, post your progress to a blog, add the link to the Linky Site. It is a Blog Hop, so come in and sit a spell. Listen to a few tales and maybe stay to share some of your own.

It's WIPpet Wednesday too! The idea is from K.L. Schwengel. You take the date, play with the math, and viola a snippet of your WIP. Post your link and /or visit the fellow WIPpeteers here. I have to use a small part of the secret project. I don't want to give anything any but it's time to start sharing it. Today is 7/8. Using the day 8, I will show 8 sentences.

Set up: Cumi was left alone and Marty is curious. If I gave you more it would spoil future WIPpet posts. There will be more later. I promise. This one is gonna be a longer project.

Marty raised his eyebrows, “Really? You and him close?”

Cumi was suddenly aware that she was alone. She didn’t know all of the rules that applied here and it was obvious that she was from out of town. “He’s like a mentor. He teaches me all kinds of stuff. You know,” she was at a loss for what else to say.

“I saw you kiss him earlier. That’s some mentorship you got there,” he grinned and turned away.

Distance Taken

It was a Saturday! Not my first choice of days to wake up early on. But...well not even a day to wake up early to go running on.

But there was a reason. It was for Allie. That was the reason I got up early on a Saturday.

I tried to convince that Saturdays were great days for sleeping in, but it never worked. She was always up early. Ready to run. It was always the same thing, Friday night we would be out somewhere, sometimes bowling (she always beat me) or to a movie, and then afterward we would end up at the all Bagel-Tarium and Snack Shack. I would try to explain that it was the one day of the week you could truly sleep in. “You see,” I said to her, “Monday through Friday you were a slave to school or work, and Sunday was for God. Well, if you like that sort of thing. That leaves Saturday for sleeping…or other such things” I felt like I was presenting a thesis in high school, it was awkward and my palms were sweaty.

She would just laugh and say she had her Saturday rituals and I had mine.

The words echoed from last night to the sunshine and far too early hours. The sky was bright and blue, and I scanned the sky to see a couple of birds flying overhead.

I sighed, “Really?”

She nodded and said, "I am glad you came out to join me, and not just because of the health benefits." She smiled a wide grin and began to stretch.

“Me too. But Saturdays were those days when nothing mattered and you can just do nothing.” I tried to sound convincing but felt I was failing after I said it.

“Right! Well you might feel that way. Probably because you have nothing that matters,” she said as she leaned down stretching her hamstrings. “You coming, or are you going stand there watching me?” asking in that nonchalant way of hers.

I just stared at her, watching her kneeling in the dusty driveway--breathing in her slow rhythmic and stretching in that way that I found sexy. "I have things that matter..." going quiet and eyeing her movement from one leg to the next.

“Seriously? Like what?” she asked as she moved to stretch her quads. The early morning sunlight bounced off her auburn hair making it look purpley and red. “You just gonna stand there gaping...” she trailed off, touching her fingers to her feet and circling upward in some exotic shamanic dance.”What matters to you?" she asked me.

She was definitely flexible and it made me think inappropriate thoughts rise to my mind.

"We should get moving Gretz. Time waits for no man, or woman," and she winked at me. "Besides this was your idea, wasn't it?" motioning to the sneakers and early morning sunshine.

She was right. The conversation leads to running and how he wanted to try to get into shape. Allie had suggested it and I jumped at the bait, not realizing what I was getting into. I guess I have more at stake than sacrificing my Saturday morning was worth it. “I know. It was.”

"You stretching?" she asked, as she moved onto another set of stretches.

"Of course," I called over, miming basic stretching but my mind was thinking of other things, like watching her graceful movements. I knew I should be stretching. Hell, I was a good fifty pound overweight, but I couldn’t get my motivated, especially with Allie warming up in front of me. I was distracted. My plan for today seems suddenly flimsy. Not really sure I could go through with it.

She lifted her head to meet my eyes, “You haven’t stretched AT ALL!” Her voice seemed accusatory across the space between us.

“I am. I just stretched before I came over to meet you. I am already limber,” I said, “See?” I took my right foot and leaned back and I felt the muscle tense as I bounced up and down. “Look, totally stretched,” I said trying to sound professional, like I knew what I was doing. Truth was, it hurt, but I wasn’t going to show Allie that I really hadn't stretch. I couldn't show her my weakness. Certainly not until I said something!

“That’s not how you should do it, but as long and you are stretching, then I guess…” she trailed off to sweep her torso down and around, pulling her arms higher. It was then that I saw how she tight fitting her top clung to her breasts and I forgot everything about stretching or not stretching I was doing.

My mind went to the male place of reason and ran with possibilities of Allie’s flexibility. Her muscles swimming underneath her running clothes and I could imagine all kinds of things. Things that would make my mother blush. Things that I would have to go to confessional for.

This was probably the best part of the morning watching her warm up routine. The sinuous and firm form and I how warm I felt in the crisp morning air. Lost in my thoughts I pulled at my arms in a mock display of stretching should Allie be watching.

“Heads up!” I hear her say and a water bottle suddenly flew through the air and hit my right shoulder. It felt like a brick slamming into my stocky form. I was a little knocked off balanced and I fumbled to catch the bottle. It dropped it and stepped sideways awkwardly into the dirty driveway to avoid falling over, but end up on one knee anyway. I felt the little stones bury into my knee and a tiny groan escaped my lips.

“Nice one, Gretz…” Allie said and she jogging over to me and helped me up, "Grab my hand,” she said planting her brightly sneakered feet and pulling me up to standing position, “Not paying attention, huh?” she laughed as I tried to pick up my water bottle. “Warmed up, then?”

I laughed, feeling suddenly self-conscious, “Yup, just call me Noodle Legs.” I felt horrible and felt my cheeks flush. I was sure she was going to say something, but she just dusted me off.

"Okay, let's go!"

I didn’t have the heart to say no, that I had been too busy ogling her athletic body and thinking impure thoughts. At least it was Saturday and not Sunday. I could think them and just confess tomorrow. Maybe I would have something to really confess about tomorrow. I grinned at the thought and started to jog.

“We’ll start slow since you haven’t been running,” she said to me.

“Nah, let’s just get to it,” I said confidently, not thinking about the possible outcome of that choice.

Her eyes met mine and I saw the greeny hazel of them, “Well,” she paused to grab my water bottle from the ground, “Even if you are up for a straight run, I want to start slow, Smarty.” She handed me the bottle, “Clasp that to your belt, Gretz and let’s go,” and she took off at a gentle lopping gait.

I didn’t think it would burn this bad. It burns that bad…

Every single breath I took, it burned. I didn’t want to show weakness and I was enjoying my time with Allie. Truth was that I spent all winter thinking about asking her out. We conversed a lot over the long winter months through email and text messages. It was hard to get down to see her when she lived a good fifty miles away and I had no car.

Allie kept trying to talk to me.

There wasn’t a lot of chatter between us as I had to focus on my breathing. My lungs were burning and saw pin prick of light around my peripheral vision.

“So, Gretz, do you know why I love to run on Saturdays?” she suddenly said over to me. I shook my head. No words escaped my lips. I was just trying to jog and breathe without keeling over.

Again I shook my head and huffed a little under my breath.

“I have morning classes every day. Every damn day from eight to noon. There is no chance to sleep in. There is always class. Been that way the last two semesters. I started running because I could get an early start every other day, I thought while not add Saturday to the roster of early mornings.”

There was silence as all I heard was the thud of our feet hitting the ground, most of the fog had burned off by now and the sun was warm making my skin feel clammy. It was warm for a spring morning, but not that warm I thought. It felt so good being with Allie that I just tied to keep up with her and listened to her talk, about anything and everything. That and I couldn’t talk or I would probably pass out trying to do so.

“And Sunday mornings Mom comes down to visit me and we go to church in town. I hate it. Hate!" she emphasized it, almost dramatically. "Not really a church person, but Mom insists" I nodded. "She drives all the way down here so we can go spend time together.

“Up at seven and dressed, church at eight, followed by brunch.” Silence fell in step. “I hate it. Not the brunch necessarily, but the church. Did I say that already?"

I wanted to say something, but I couldn’t form words. In the three and a half years since I met her, I was haven’t been able to tell her anything but the basics. I had grown fond of her. Even liked her, but I was always too scared to say anything. To tell her that she made my heart flutter and love the sound of her voice. That I thought about doing the most creative things to her to please her, sometimes sexual. I never said anything. Not once…

It occurred to me that maybe I was going to miss out. We were in our last semester, the last spring semester together. I should say something…

“Do you go to church, Gretz?” I heard her ask me. "I don't think I ever asked you that? Religion's not my thing," she said.

I turned to face the road, not sure what to say. I also was dragged to church by my mother, but I didn’t mind it so much. I was a good catholic, but Allie was not. Well, she obvious just pretended. Not that I cared. I like her whether God was involved or not. I was afraid to tell her that too, afraid of a lot of things. But, I knew that I needed to say something, so I turned to glance at her. I opened my month to force something out of my huffing and grasping month.

The world turned over and I lost all of my breath suddenly.

It went dark.

The first thing I felt was the pain in my chest and the burning. I didn’t think anything about but the pain; it was then that I felt something on my lips, warm and wet. I wanted to exhale out, but couldn’t. There was a need to cough, but I felt her month over mine. It flowed into my mouth and down my trachea. The cool air from her lungs was opening my windpipe, while my pants felt warm and tight. I moved my lips, pulling away coughing.

“Gretz?” I heard Allie’s voice and the light made everything look like blobs of colour and the soft rays of sunlight filled my vision, “Gretz, are you okay?” she said sounded concerned standing over me.

I coughed and tried to sit up. Allie pushed me back gently laying me back to the ground, “Please don’t move yet and breathe Alan.” I heard her say my first name and I was aware of pain in my side and ankle. Coughing, I tried to roll onto my side breathing in dirt and grit. The sun was mostly midway across the sky now. It couldn’t be that late, only ten minutes or so since I blacked out. I think.

“How…” cough cough, “How…long?” cough cough, I felt the gritty dust from the dry roadway on my teeth and lips. The memory on Allie’s lips on mine, it didn’t feel strange.

“That you were out?” she asked.

I continue to cough and gasp and nodded.

“Slowly, Alan. Breathe slowly,” she said as patted my back as reinforcement.

“My ankle…hurts…” I spluttered and was still coughing, but felt a cool plastic bottle press into my hands.

“You tripped. Can you move it?”

“No, I don’t think.” I tried to rotate the ankle and felt a burning shoot up my leg, “Shit! That hurts.” And began another round of coughing.

“What?” Allie ran her hands down my leg, feeling the length for any injury.

I am not going to lie, I liked it. Her on my leg, not the pain.

“The leg,” I motioned to the part she was touching, “It burns. It feels like a fire burning.”

“Ah,” said, “I thought you said you stretched?” I turned to look at her, she was frowning, but I could see concern in her hazel green eyes.

My breath was returning and I felt flushed. I shook my head. “No, I guess I didn’t,” and my eyes dropped to the ground. "I'm sorry..."

“Muscle strain, that’s all it is, Gretz.” She stood up, “You ready? We need to get you to stand slowly, and walk it out,” she said accenting the words.

But, the thought occurred to me that maybe I should say something now. We were alone on Country Route 5 and it was the first day of spring, too lovely a day to ruin without saying something. We weren't going anywhere yet, or maybe we were. I really hoped we would go somewhere.

I coughed and tried to take a few more deep breaths. “Slowly, Gretz,” she said. After a few moments, that somehow felt like infinity, I sat up and pulled my burning leg closer to me.

“Now?”

“Yes, now!” she said so deliberately and stood next to me. She leaned down and grabbed me around my rather thick middle, “on the count of three slowly start to stand.”

I shifted to my knees and wincing in pain. Allie counted, "1, 2, 3…” and I slowly rose to my feet. She stood next to me, arm around my waist, keeping me stable. “Easy.”

“Call me, Alan,” I said trying to look at her, but she was not paying attention to me.

“Okay, weirdo,” she said. She got me to stand on my own, with my one foot only touching the ground with the ball of my foot.

Standing there with her arms around my waist, “I have to say....”

“…Go ahead,” she rolled her left hand out in a motion to hurry up. “Daylight’s wasting, Gretz.” She paused to look at me, “Sorry, Alan. What is it?”

“Allison, I…I....” I stumbled and stuttered all while faking a coughing fit trying to find words and my courage, but it was gone. After a moment I said, “Can we do this again?”

Allie eyed me suspiciously, “Uh, sure, Alan. But you probably should stretch next time," she shoved me gently, while still holding onto my waist. “Let’s walk.”

I turned away and took slow step, hobbling while she helped to support my weight. I wanted to bury myself in the dusty ground, but couldn’t actually leave Allie’s side. I knew it wasn’t going to be. Even after of this time, all the places we have gone, I still couldn’t tell her that I loved her.

“Gretz?” she suddenly asked. I couldn’t look at her., feeling too dumb, and too numb. “Gretz…” she said sounding sad. I still couldn’t turn to face her. “Alan,” her voice changed and she took my chin and turned my face to hers. She kissed me out there on County Route 5 in a mouthful of dust, sweat, and a pulled muscle.
