Top 10 David Bowie Songs!!

I think it is time to discuss David Bowie.

Let me point out two things. First, the effin' Goblin King!!! Yeah, my 10 year old self was not sure what to make of it, but I knew I liked it. I liked it A LOT!!!

~DROOLS~
And those eyes!!! Yeah, I never realized he had two different colours. What always struck me was the intensity of those eyes.So yeah, stare into those for a minute...

I awoke that morning to the news via my Facebook feed, which as you know is not the most reliable, but there was so much of it. Seriously he JUST released an album how could he have died? Truthfull,y I hadn't listened to much of his newer stuff, I had The Next Day album and had listened to it a few times. but I didn't really know the newer material. I felt like a horrible Bowie fan.

But then I pulled out my greatest hits album, the Labyrinth soundtrack, and the Hours... album (big when I was in college). I started to listen to him sing, I mean really listen. I also had in my collection Heathen and Reality, and I went out to buy Blackstar that very day. Oddly enough Best Buy did not have Blackstar, but the Target did. That was a rant in and of itself. I began listening to the new album and reclaiming the new Bowie material as my own and loving his older material. Pretty much any where I went that first day i was listening to Bowie.

It made me realize that Bowie was a unique artist and a deep soul. There were lyrics that I found captivating that I missed out the first time I listened to his music. I am still discovering new things within the music, This has given me a  greater respect for his music, even if I don't always get it (because sometimes I don't). Its like poetry, not everyone will understand poetry or get it, but somewhere in the middle I found an understand of Bowie and his lyrics. Deep and meaningful, and usually when you aren't paying attention it will hit you. Bowie 's lyrics are very much poetry, and as a poet I can appreciate the cadence he creates within his songs and the worlds he builds.

I want to share the songs of Bowie that have left their marks on me. I don't doubt that the more I listen to Blackstar, The Next Day, Reality, and Heathen, the more I will find the poetry, the magic, the truths within the truths Bowie has written.

Today I present my top 10 David Bowie songs...

Now I ranked them, yes some of you might take umbrage to where I put some of the songs or have not included others. These are the songs that I have listened to repeatedly or mean something to me. I have a great respect for all of Bowie's music and his rather extensive career. Please leave me a comment with your favourite Bowie tracks and why they are important to you, Dear Readers.I love to hear from you.

First it is time for the Honourable Mentions. The songs that didn't make the list. I bought the Hours... album while in college and I remember by fascinated by the new Bowie. I kind if ate up this album. It felt like an ethereal album, like something out of a dream. So, I chose If I'm Dreaming of My Life from this album and The Stars are Out Tonight from The Next Day, which was the first track I heard and the first single. these two are songs that when I first heard them I knew they were Bowie songs.

10. Valentine's Day. There is something haunting about Bowie's voice and this track kind of hits me in the cockles. I love it. Not really sure why, I just love it.

9. Space Oddity. An obvious choice here and another example of Bowie's voice sounding dream-like, ethereal. I think that was why he resonating as alien or angel. He was definitely other-worldly.

8. Rebel Rebel. Just a good song. Something with a nice beat.

7. Thursday's Child. Definitely the first song I heard when Bowie returned. I always love this song, even though is was kind of sad. I was born a Thursday's child myself and I think I understood the point of it.

6. Let's Dance. Just that....Let's dance!!!

5. I'm Afraid of Americans. I knew of this song, but it wasn't until I heard it at a club that I realized that it was a fabulous song for dancing to. Still is a favourite.

4. Underground.  I am a Labyrinth girl. The Goblin King was my first crush. I would always belt this song while watching the movie.

3. Lazarus. I have only heard it a few times, but it is my current favourite from Blackstar. There is a lot of truth to this song. My heart aches, but I see where he was coming from. Very beautiful!!

2. Modern Love. Catchy. Pop-filled. Fun!

1. As the World Falls Down. was there ever a doubt. I loved this scene. Love Bowie's voice. Something just made me feel good about the song. That and David had made a literal version of the song, Watch it here.

OctPoWri Mo: Intimidation Game

Write cinematically.  Use your words to tell the story. Think deeply about the emotions, the mood, the scene. Use a clip from a favourite movie/music video, mute it and let yourself be inspired.

If we are talking movies, then there is only one choice. I am writing a poem, free form. I know, what a surprise! I usually write in poetic forms on varying styles, meter, and whatnot. Not today! Today is about to explore another medium and write something beautiful out of it.

My favourite movie of all-time is Labyrinth. I chose the final confrontation scene to write about. I think it turned out well. What you you think, Dear Readers? Enjoy!!

Go and visit my fellow poet over at OctPoWriMo.

Intimidation Game

Like stalking the prey,
but the prey is smarter than you
and doesn't run.
And you are forced out of hiding.
Bold,
what do you do?
Armed with your wit
and wiley good looks
meet in the center,
on neutral ground they say.
It's like a game,
a war
You so confident--
she so naive.
Who is calling the shots?
with nothing but a crystal
you tell her.
She pushes back.
You give her what she asks,
but only does she push harder.
A game, they say,
intimidation
and nothing is guarenteed,
except their will be a victor.
Do you really know the outcome,
when the battle is so obvious.
Standing strong confidant,
weak and cowering,
only when the clock does chime will they know.

But who is the predator
and who is the prey?

Top 10 Really Stupid, Silly, yet Highly Amusing Movies that Make Me Happy

10. Ghostbusters
While not a stupid movie exactly, it gets props for have the most quotable lines in an movie, ever. It's more silly than stupid (I am going to be using the word Silly a lot in this blog. Just warning you.) I think I watched this movie about eleventy billion times grow up. I still watch this movie A LOT! It's just a just a fun movie. The acting is well done, for a comedy, maybe not stellar, but long lasting. Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd make this movie. The cartoon only added to the awesome, but then again I am a child of the 80's, Ghostbusters was one of our things.

Originally the role of Dr. Venkman was to be played by John Belushi, friend to and fellow SNL alumni, Dan Ackroyd, and was written by Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis

Favourite Quotes: Far to many to mention, but the highlights are "Where do these stairs go?" pause "They go up." "I feel like the floor of a taxi cab."

9. Adventures in Babysitting
Yes, this is a movie and if you haven't seen it, then to need to fix that. It's unrealistic, but so much that it's hilarious. Elisabeth Shue in her early days and also features a young Vincent D'Onoforio as the Mean Mechanic Dawson/Thor. Valerie Bertinelli auditioned for the role of Chris Parker.

Favourite Quote: "Don't F*ck with the Babysitter!"

Favourite Moment: Babysitting Blues

8. Clue
Tim Curry is a GOD among men!! That is all!!! It's a movie based on a board game people. Really! Battleship should hope to be this good. Sometimes one has to accept that the sillier a thing is, the better it ultimately it is.

Favourite Quote: actually most memorable - "Flames are shooting out of my eyes."

7. Oscar
The movie that doesn't stand still. It also features Tim Curry, but also Sylvester Stallone. Just watch it!

6. Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
Yes, I like this movie. No, I am not a fan of the TV show (actually, I haven't really watch the TV show. i don;t hate the show, just didn't really watch it when it was out; that would be 1997 and I was graduating from high school. I am currently watching it with Sara, Buffy fan Extraordinaire). Nothing about this movie is classic, but everything about this movie makes me laugh; from Paul Reubens to Kristy Swanson punching Donald Sutherland.

Originally written by Joss Whedon, who created the subsequent television show. There is a legion of Buffy fans out there. I can say that while I like the movie, because I grew up on it; the television is equal good. I am currently watching it to get myself caught up in the Buffy-Verse.

Favourite Quote: "Kill them. Kill them a lot!"

5. Scorched
Another fast paced comedy in the vein of Oscar or Clue, with a stellar ensemble cast. It basic about the employees of a small desert bank and how they hate their jobs/boss. Woody Harrelson  and John Cleese are at their best here. If you want something funny and silly to watch, check it out.

Favourite Quote: "They're like little ice cream bugs."

4. The Breakfast Club
This is a movie that I can also quote this movie verbatim. There is much truth to the story and the characters in Breakfast Club. And the soundtrack is pretty good too! There are few soundtrack that have good music throughout the movie; maybe not the most famous, or even considered the best of the song, but they work to augment the story and are listenable on their own.

Favourite Quotes: "If he gets up, we'll all get up; it'll be anarchy," "If I have to come in there, I'm cracking skulls," or "Does Barry Manilow know you raid his wardrobe."

Best scene: Dancing in the Library

3. Labyrinth
Yes, a Muppet movie! But, this is the movie that I ALMOST didn't watch this movie. My dad quotes me and saying, "This looks stupid!" Famous last words indeed. The story is simple, but the combination of Henson, Lucas, and Bowie is epic! Epic!!!! Yes, it's very silly, not NOT Shakespeare or Coppola, but it's Henson. Henson is his own category. What is lacks in story plot, more than makes up in Muppets, and David Bowie, and just all together good feeling about characters like Sir Didymus and Ludo. I wanted to be Sarah, especially in this scene, the Ballroom. Then my wonderful husband came up with a literal version of this song: As the World Fall Down.

Favourite Quotes: "Love me, fear me, do as I say and I'll be your slave."

2.  Joe Versus the Volcano
Tom Hanks before he got all big, not the movie, before he became the biggest actor out there. When he was kinda dorky and we weren't sure if he was going to be good at acting. It's a silly premise, but made awesome by Meg Ryan, Abe Vigoda, and Dan Hedaya (that guy that played Carla, from Cheer good for nothing ex-husband). Joe is going to die and decides to travel to the south pacific to jump into a volcano. It involves a quack doctor, Meg Ryan with three different roles, and floatable luggage.

Favourite Quote: Abe Vigoda - "It's my soul!"/ Tom Hanks - "You wouldn't want to lose that"; Dan Hedaya - "I know he can get the job, but can he do the job?"

1. But, I'm a Cheerleader
The little indie film that was everything and nothing all rolled into one; both proving a point and slightly offensive to someone. It featured RuPaul as a MAN and a younger Cathy Moriarty and Eddie Cibrian. It is a satirical look at gender role,s about being true with yourself, how society often wants to change a person because they don't fit the norms, and how it's best to be you even when the world is against you. The soundtrack is quite unique too. I fell in love with almost all of the songs, which are from indie and obscure artist. It's worth a watch if you like satire, or something that is a bit off the beaten path.

Favourites Songs: Glass Vase Cello Case by Tattle Tale and Together Forever in Love Go Sailor

Dear Readers, what are some  of your favourite, stupid movies thatg make you make just to watch over and over? Leave me a comment!
